I know it’s fall in most of the US but here in South Florida it’s still beach season and we are not complaining. Tourist season begins soon so we are making the most of empty beaches by leaving all the toys at home and heading out to the sand with nothing but a couple of towels, some snacks, sunscreen and our favorite swimsuits.
Yep. You heard that right: no toys. Not even one. Don’t get me wrong, when they were younger we lugged the same bag of toys out to the sand as everyone else. They gave us a bit of a reprieve and they were a distraction for the kids from putting sand in their mouths. But now that they are a bit older and more independent we leave those things at home.
There’s a whole theory about the value of letting kids be bored and what it boils down to is that, sometimes, we as parents over schedule and over stimulate our children. It’s inadvertent, of course, but when it happens we are reinforcing the idea that children need to look outside themselves for stimulation, for entertainment. So instead of bringing toys to the beach, we rely solely on our hands to build, our imaginations to entertain and our setting to distract. We look for shells and sharks’ teeth. We go for walks and play in the water.
And, sometimes, we catch a fish with our bare hands (check out those reflexes!).
At this age, bringing toys to the beach would take away from the experience. So, toys: no. Swimsuits that allow them to jump, dig, play and explore: definitely.
We have been huge fans of SwimZip since the kids were babies because all of their swimsuits are made with SPF 50+ UV sun protection material that blocks 98% of UVA and UVB sun rays. That means any place the swimsuit is covering is safe from the sun. Plus their rash guards feature a full length zipper making it the easiest rash guard swim shirt to put on and take off. No more tugging, no more tears, no more stretched out neck collars. Just slip on like a jacket, zip up the front and use their handy "no-pinch" zipper flap. Easy Peasy. And, of course, we love all of their adorable designs. This year we chose the “Jelly Jellyfish” design for him and the “Butterfly Love” for her.
So, next time you head to the beach leave the toys at home, pack your SwimZip and get ready for adventure, because adventures are where the real memories are made.
